Augusta National Women’s Amateur

The Augusta National Women’s Amateur heralded a change that was designed to grow the game of golf. Before the 2018 Masters Golf Tournament, Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley announced that the new event that would begin the following year, hoping to inspire young women to take up the game.

The inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur took place in 2019, but sadly, the 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was restored in 2021.

Format

The ANWA is a 54-hole stroke-play tournament that features an international field of 72 players. A cut takes place after 36 holes, advancing the leading 30 players to the final round at the Augusta National. If the final hole ends in a tie, the winner is decided by a sudden death playoff.

The tournament takes place over 4 days, the weekend before the Masters Golf Tournament. The first 36 holes are played at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Georgia, a short drive from Augusta. The entire field then plays at the Augusta National for a practice round on the third day of the competition before the final round.
